He was appointed Full Professor at the Czech Technical University in 1990. He has been acting as the head of the Department of Cybernetics, Czech Technical University since 1999 when he established this Department. The Department of Cybernetics was recognized as the EU Center of Research Excellence in 2000 (one of 3 in the country). For its research performance in the fields of artificial intelligence, robotics and computer vision, the Center was awarded with the prestigious European IST prize in 2006. This Department is currently staffed by 130+ researchers and represents a strong research body with remarkable international reputation.〔(Vladimír Mařík - personal homepage, Czech Technical University )〕
Besides this, Prof. Marik acted as the founder of the Rockwell Automation Research Center Prague, as a part of the Advanced Technology organization of the Rockwell Automation Inc., Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and was appointed the Managing Director of this Center in 1992. Under his leadership, the Center grew up into a respectable research facility staffed with more than 50 researchers and 90 engineers with the core expertise in the fields of system diagnostics, agent-based systems, intelligent control systems, and software development and testing. Prof. Marik left, after 17 years of service, Rockwell Automation on his own decision at the end of 2009, as he decided to change for another challenging activities.
He took over the Managing Director position of CertiCon in January 2010. He was one of the founders of this company in 1996, originally established as the Czech Technical University spin-off. In 2010 CertiCon became a member of the Austrian Christian Doppler Lab in Vienna participating in the SCADA systems development.〔(CertiCon company )〕
The main professional interests of Prof. Marik include (intelligence ), multi-agent and knowledge-based systems, soft-computing, production planning and scheduling applications. He has contributed to the basic science in the area of uncertainty processing in expert systems, in the agent-based system architectures and languages (leading to the development of AGLOBE and MAST multi-agent platforms) as well as in deployment of ontological knowledge in agent-based control systems. He was strongly involved in development of many industrial solutions, e.g. in Shipboard Automation project (funded by ONR in 2002-2006), AgentFly project (funded by Air Force Research Lab in 2004-2010), EXPLANTECH project for Skoda/Volkswagen (2006-2008) and 9 EU funded projects. Currently, he acts as the technical lead of ARUM, the EU Integrated Project aimed at multi-agent production scheduling for Airbus Industries (12 mil. EUR).
In total, since 1999, he led and participated in more than 15 projects funded by the U.S.Air Force Research Lab (USA), CERDEC – U.S.Army Research Center (USA), NASA (USA), and ONR - U.S. Navy (USA). The key solutions of this defense research co-led by Prof.Marik were licensed among others to SAAB (Sweden) and BAE Systems (UK).
He is an author or co-author of more than 130 journal and conference papers, co-author or editor of 13 books (Springer Verlag, Kluwer Academic), co-author of 4 US patents as well as 3 US patent applications. He is currently preparing – as a co-chair – the IEEE SMC Annual Conference 2013 in Manchester,UK, and the ECCAI conference to be held in 2014 in Prague.
He acts as the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Trans. System, Man and Cybernetics, part C since 2005. Under his leadership, the impact factor of the Transactions grew up from 0.435 in 2005 to 2.019 in 2011. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Czech mutation of the Scientific American magazine.
In 2006, he became a co-founder of the Czech Technical University Media Laboratory – Foundation established to support research carried out by talented students and young researchers. He has been acting as the Chairman of the Board of this Foundation since the very beginning. Currently, the eClub accelerator run by this Foundation has already incubated 41 start-ups and teams and has a direct links to several incubators in the US.〔(Czech Technical University Media Lab )〕
Prof. Marik acted as a member of the Council of the Engineering Academy of the Czech Republic (2005-2010) and was elected a foreign member of the Russian Engineering Academy in 2009. He is an Honorary Member of the Austrian Society for Artificial Intelligence (2003).
